West Wyalong FRP Pipeline Replacement Project

Overview

Due to aging infrastructure essential work was recently undertaken on a section of pipeline along the Northern side of the Mid-Western Highway, at West Wyalong.

1.5 kilometres of new mains pipeline replaced the old main from terminal reservoir storage on the Western side of West Wyalong, along the Mid-Western Highway and connecting into the reticulation system near Ungarie Road.

This project was brought forward in councils capital works program following two critical bursts in summer months of December 2024 and January 2025 that saw West Wyalong and Wyalong residents without water supply for extended hours during repair works.

The previous water main was a 450mm diameter Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) pipeline installed in the 1980’s, renewed with a 375mm diameter O-PVC pipeline.

Under the railway line existing ductile pipe could be connected into from each side, avoiding the need for works in the rail corridor.

Timing

  • Designs and environment review completed internally and finalised in July 2025
  • Works commenced in August 2025
  • The project concluded with night-works to commission the new main into service to finalise the project in December 2025.

Project Benefits

The project benefits customers in West Wyalong and Wyalong urban areas, providing:

  • Decrease in supply interruptions.
  • Replacement of ageing infrastructure
  • Provision of an alternative supply option to be constructed between Showground Road and Church Street in West Wyalong.

Works for the alternate supply for future mitigation is planned for delivery during January and February 2026.
