Community Update for Discoloured Water
With the warmer months approaching, Goldenfields Water are aware of a spike in discoloured water events across our water supply schemes, including in Junee. We acknowledge this as an ongoing problem and would like to assure all of our customers that we are not complacent about the issue nor the impact it has on your lives.
Goldenfields Water undertake a number of programs to help alleviate the frequency of discoloured water, including:
- Water mains replacement
- Changing the layout of the water system such as removing 'dead ends' where possible
- Regular flushing and swabbing programs (happening now in Junee and West Wyalong)
- Reservoir cleaning. Goldenfields Water engages specialised industry contractors to conduct inspections and reservoir cleaning services.
Goldenfields have invested in its own asset- a Mobile Filtration Unit. This will be in action over the summer in your area. This innovative technology involves a filtration system mounted on a truck which is capable of cleaning supply mains without the loss of any water
What Causes Discoloured Water?
Water that is delivered to much of Goldenfields Water’s network comes from groundwater, sourced from Oura and Matong. All water contains natural minerals, with the levels of such minerals varying depending on the source. Iron and manganese are safe minerals at the concentration found in Goldenfields Water’s source water, although they can discolour water when it becomes accumulated and/or reacts with chlorine residuals.
Discoloured water can also occur for other reasons such as system design, ageing infrastructure, water mains failure, and galvanised materials within private water supply lines. We want to reassure customers that Goldenfields Water’s focus on reducing discolouration of water events and the inconvenience it causes is a high priority.
What Do I Do?
Run one tap for two to three minutes to see if the water clears. Outdoor taps are recommended as the water can be used in gardens or on grass. If the water does not run clear in a reasonable amount of time, call Goldenfields Water.
